Connect Samsara to TruckIT with an API Token

Learn how to create a Samsara API token and send it securely to TruckIT for integration setup.

Use this article to connect Samsara to TruckIT using an API token.

TruckIT uses the Samsara API token to connect fleet data from Samsara into TruckIT. A Samsara admin should create the token, choose the required permissions, copy the token, and send it securely to TruckIT.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • Admin access to the Samsara Dashboard
  • Permission to create API tokens
  • Access to Samsara settings or developer settings
  • Your company name
  • A best contact for the integration setup
  • A secure way to send the API token to TruckIT

If you cannot find API token settings, you may need a Samsara admin to generate the token for you.

Log in to Samsara

  1. Go to the Samsara Dashboard.
  2. Sign in with an admin account.

Use an admin account because non-admin users may not have access to API token settings.

Open Samsara settings

  1. In the left navigation, click Settings or the gear icon.
  2. Look for the area where API or integration settings are managed.

The exact wording may vary by Samsara account. The current TruckIT article says this area may appear as API Tokens, Developer Settings, Integrations, or API.

Create a new API token

TruckIT recommends creating a new API token for the integration.

  1. Click Create token, Generate token, or New API token.
  2. Name the token: TruckIT Integration
  3. If Samsara asks for scopes or permissions, select the permissions needed for the TruckIT integration.

Common read-access scopes may include fleet, assets, drivers, vehicles, trips, sites, or similar Samsara data areas. If you are not sure which scopes are required, select the default read scopes and TruckIT can confirm what is needed.

Copy the token

After the API token is created:

  1. Click Copy.
  2. Paste the token somewhere secure temporarily.
  3. Do not close the page until you are sure the token has been saved securely.

Samsara may not show the full token again after you leave the page. If the token is no longer visible, create a new token and use the new value.

Send the token to TruckIT

Send the API token securely to TruckIT.

The current article instructs users to send the token to:

And copy:

cbuell@truckit.com

Include:

  • Company name
  • Best contact name
  • Best contact email
  • Best contact phone number

After the token is sent

After TruckIT receives the Samsara API token, TruckIT can continue the integration setup.

TruckIT may follow up if:

  • The token does not work
  • The token has missing permissions
  • The token was copied incorrectly
  • The token needs additional scopes
  • A Samsara admin needs to update or regenerate the token

Treat API tokens like passwords.

Recommended best practices:

  • Create a dedicated token for TruckIT.
  • Name the token TruckIT Integration.
  • Use the minimum permissions needed for the integration.
  • Copy the token carefully.
  • Store the token securely until it is sent.
  • Do not share the token in public channels.
  • Regenerate the token if it was lost or exposed.
  • Revoke old or unused tokens if they are no longer needed.

Troubleshooting

I cannot find API Tokens in Samsara

You may not have admin access. Ask a Samsara admin to create the token for you or confirm that your user role has access to API settings.

I do not see Developer Settings, Integrations, or API

Samsara settings may vary by account. Check Settings, the gear icon, API Tokens, Developer Settings, Integrations, or API.

The token is no longer visible

Create a new token. Samsara may not show the full token again after you leave the page.

TruckIT says there is a permission error

Update the token scopes or regenerate the token with the correct permissions.

I am not sure which permissions to choose

Start with the default read scopes if available, then TruckIT can confirm whether additional permissions are required.
